The media buying, tracking & SEO lexicon
35 terms decoded for media buyers, growth managers and e-commerce operators in Morocco. Snippet-ready definitions, real numbers, cross-links.
The vocabulary shifts fast between Meta, Google and the server-side stack. Here are the 35 terms we use every day at Webotic to run our clients' campaigns in Morocco.
Tracking & data
- GTM Server-Side
A Google Tag Manager container hosted on your own server (Cloud Run, AWS) that intercepts browser hits before relaying them to Meta, Google Ads or TikTok. It hardens tracking against ad blockers, Safari ITP and third-party cookie loss.
Example. A Casablanca e-commerce store moves from 62% to 94% of Purchase events received by Meta after migrating its client-side pixel to a GTM SS on Cloud Run (~180 MAD/month).
- Meta CAPI
Meta's Conversions API: a server-to-server stream that sends events (Purchase, Lead, AddToCart) directly from your backend or GTM SS to Facebook, alongside or instead of the browser pixel. Improves signal quality and post-iOS 14 measurement.
Example. With an event matching score of 8.2/10 via CAPI, a Moroccan retailer recovers 30 to 40% of Meta conversions previously lost to AdBlock and iOS.
- Marketing pixel
A small JavaScript snippet injected in the browser that sends user actions (page view, add to cart, purchase) to the ad platform (Meta, TikTok, Google). Vulnerable to ad blockers, ITP and third-party cookie deprecation.
Example. A standalone Meta pixel captures only 55 to 70% of actual purchases on a Moroccan site in 2026, which is why pairing it with CAPI matters.
- Server-side tracking
A method that sends analytics and ad events from your server (or a GTM SS container) rather than from the browser. You control what gets sent, bypass blockers and improve site performance.
Example. A WooCommerce site in Rabat shaves 0.4 s off LCP by replacing 6 client-side pixels with a single server-side endpoint.
- Consent Mode v2
A Google standard that passes user consent status (granted / denied) to Google Ads and GA4 tags through two flags: ad_storage and ad_user_data. Required since March 2024 to target European audiences.
Example. Without active Consent Mode v2, an advertiser loses access to Google Ads remarketing audiences for European visitors as soon as they reject cookies.
- Event matching
The process by which Meta or Google tie an event (purchase, lead) to a real user account using sent parameters: hashed email, phone, IP, user agent, cookie. Richer matching means smarter algorithm learning.
Example. A Meta event matching quality (EMQ) above 7/10 typically lifts ROAS by 15 to 25% through better algorithmic optimization.
- Event deduplication
A mechanism that prevents the same purchase from being counted twice when sent by both the browser pixel and CAPI. The same event_id is attached to both calls; the ad platform keeps only one.
Example. Without a shared event_id, duplicated Purchase events inflate Meta ROAS by 40 to 80% and distort budget arbitrage decisions.
- BigQuery
Google Cloud's serverless data warehouse that ingests raw exports from GA4, Meta Ads, TikTok and CRM. Used to cross-join sources, build custom attribution models and feed Looker Studio with a single source of truth.
Example. A Moroccan advertiser consolidates 5 ad platforms + Shopify in BigQuery for around 80 MAD/month and gets a reliable multi-touch ROAS instead of last-click.
Media performance
- CPM
Cost Per Mille: cost for one thousand ad impressions served. Measures the price of visibility regardless of interaction. Used as a benchmark for competitive pressure on a given audience and time window.
Example. Average Meta CPM in Morocco 2026: 8 to 14 MAD on broad audiences, 25 to 40 MAD on premium e-commerce purchaser retargeting.
- CPC
Cost Per Click: average price paid for a user to click an ad. Computed as spend divided by clicks. Indicator of creative quality and audience relevance.
Example. A competitive Google Search CPC in Morocco 2026 lands between 1.80 and 4.50 MAD on uncrowded B2C queries.
- CPA / CPL
Cost Per Acquisition (purchase) or Cost Per Lead (form fill): media spend divided by the number of conversions obtained. The core KPI of any performance media buy.
Example. Morocco e-commerce CPL 2026: roughly 25 MAD on Meta, 60 to 90 MAD on LinkedIn for B2B SaaS.
- ROAS
Return On Ad Spend: revenue generated divided by ad spend, expressed as a multiplier (e.g. 4x). Measures gross media efficiency before product margin, fees and logistics.
Example. A 3.5x Meta ROAS on a product with 40% gross margin leaves roughly 40 MAD of profit per 100 MAD of ad spend.
- Frequency cap
A limit on how many impressions a single user receives over a given period. Prevents creative overexposure, protects the brand and avoids burning tight retargeting audiences.
Example. Beyond 4 to 5 weekly exposures in retargeting, click-through rate typically drops 30% and CPA drifts upward.
- Lookalike audience
An audience generated by Meta, Google or TikTok to resemble a seed (buyers, hot leads, top 10% LTV). The 1% to 10% setting controls statistical proximity to the source.
Example. A 1% lookalike built on 5,000 Moroccan buyers typically performs 2x better than a generic interest-based targeting.
- Retargeting
Re-engaging users who already interacted with the brand: site visitors, abandoned carts, video viewers, email openers. Delivers the best short-term ROAS but saturates quickly without top-funnel feeding it.
Example. A 7-day cart-abandonment retargeting campaign typically converts at 6 to 12% at a CPA 60% lower than prospecting.
- Performance Max
An automated Google Ads format that serves your creatives across Search, YouTube, Display, Gmail, Discover and Maps from a single AI-driven campaign. Optimizes one objective (conversion, value, leads).
Example. A well-fed PMax with strong conversion signals and Merchant Center feed can cut CPA by 20 to 30% vs Search alone after a 4-week learning phase.
Lead generation
- MQL
Marketing Qualified Lead: a prospect showing enough intent (downloaded asset, demo request, behavioral score) to be handed to sales. Marketing's filter before sales invests its time.
Example. Out of 100 raw leads generated via Meta Ads in Morocco, 30 to 45 become MQL after scoring, and 8 to 12 become SQL.
- SQL
Sales Qualified Lead: a prospect validated by sales as having a clear budget, need and timeline. The stage that triggers opportunity creation in the CRM and pipeline tracking.
Example. A B2B SaaS SQL in Morocco typically costs 600 to 1,200 MAD all-in (media + SDR time) in 2026.
- Lead magnet
A piece of content or tool (PDF guide, free audit, calculator, webinar) offered in exchange for an email or WhatsApp number. Top-of-funnel mechanic that fills the pipeline at a controlled cost.
Example. A free SEO audit lead magnet typically converts 12 to 18% of landing traffic, vs 2 to 4% for a plain 'contact us' form.
- Pipeline marketing
An approach that steers marketing by the commercial pipeline value generated (MAD of opportunities created) rather than raw lead volume. Aligns marketing and sales on a shared revenue KPI.
Example. An effective B2B pipeline marketing motion in Morocco targets a pipeline-to-spend ratio of at least 5x on a rolling 90-day basis.
- Lead scoring
A system that scores each lead based on declared data (role, company size) and behavior (pages viewed, emails opened). Above a threshold, the lead is auto-routed to sales.
Example. A simple model (+10 pts per demo request, +5 per pricing page view, -20 for free email) filters 60% of noise on Meta B2B leads.
- Closing rate
Percentage of commercial opportunities that turn into signed customers over a period. A key indicator of lead quality and sales performance, distinct from marketing conversion rate.
Example. A healthy B2B SaaS closing rate in Morocco sits between 18 and 28% of SQL; in e-commerce, cart-to-purchase conversion lands around 1.5 to 3%.
SEO
- Search intent
The real motivation behind a query: informational, navigational, commercial or transactional. Google infers it from the displayed SERP. Aligning page format with the dominant intent drives 80% of ranking potential.
Example. For 'media buying agency Casablanca' the intent is commercial: Google expects a service page, not a blog article.
- Featured snippet
An answer box shown in position zero above the organic results, containing a definition, list or table pulled from a page. Captures 30 to 50% of clicks on the target query.
Example. A 40 to 60-word definition placed at the start of a section in a paragraph tag is the format Google most often promotes for definitional snippets.
- E-E-A-T
Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness: quality criteria used by Google's human raters and reflected by the algorithms. Critical on YMYL topics (health, finance, legal).
Example. Citing an expert author with linked bio, adding sources and surfacing real case studies typically lifts a Moroccan B2B site by 5 to 8 positions on competitive queries.
- hreflang
An HTML tag or HTTP header that tells Google the language and region targeted by a page and lists its equivalent variants. Prevents cannibalization between FR / EN / AR versions of the same content.
Example. A multilingual Moroccan site with broken hreflang ends up showing the English version to French-speaking users and loses 20 to 30% of organic CTR.
- Schema.org / JSON-LD
A structured data vocabulary embedded as JSON-LD in the page head to describe its content (article, product, FAQ, organization). Unlocks rich result eligibility and sharpens Google's understanding.
Example. Well-implemented Product + Review + AggregateRating markup can lift an e-commerce product page's organic CTR by 1.3x to 1.7x.
- Core Web Vitals
Three Google performance metrics used as ranking signals: LCP (loading of the largest visible element), INP (interaction responsiveness) and CLS (visual stability). Measured on real user data (CrUX).
Example. 2026 targets: LCP < 2.5 s, INP < 200 ms, CLS < 0.1. Cutting LCP from 3.8 s to 1.9 s can win 2 to 4 positions on competitive queries.
Stack & ops
- Cloud Run
Google Cloud's serverless service that hosts Docker containers billed per request. Ideal home for a GTM Server-Side: auto-scaling, no servers to maintain, cost aligned with real traffic.
Example. A GTM SS on Cloud Run for a Moroccan site doing 200,000 sessions/month typically costs 150 to 220 MAD/month all-in.
- Looker Studio
Google's free data visualization tool (formerly Data Studio) that connects GA4, Google Ads, BigQuery, Sheets and third-party connectors to build live, shareable dashboards.
Example. A multi-channel Looker Studio dashboard (Meta + Google + Shopify via BigQuery) replaces 4 weekly Excel exports and typically saves the growth manager 3 hours per week.
- n8n
An open-source, self-hostable workflow automation platform, the free-software equivalent of Zapier or Make. Connects CRM, ads, BigQuery, WhatsApp and webhooks to orchestrate leads, alerts and reporting without heavy code.
Example. An n8n workflow that pushes each Meta lead into HubSpot + the sales WhatsApp within the minute, hosted on a 50 MAD/month VPS.
- Webhook
An HTTP URL that automatically receives a notification (JSON payload) when an event occurs in a source system: new lead, payment, cart abandonment. The foundational block of any real-time integration.
Example. A Shopify 'order/paid' webhook calling a Cloud Run endpoint propagates the purchase to Meta CAPI in under 500 ms.
Compliance
- GDPR
General Data Protection Regulation: 2018 European framework that imposes a legal basis, explicit consent, access and erasure rights for any processing of an EU resident's personal data.
Example. A Moroccan site targeting European users via Meta Ads must deploy a GDPR-compliant CMP; otherwise fines can reach 4% of global revenue.
- Law 09-08
Morocco's 2009 law on the protection of individuals with regard to personal data processing. Enforced by the CNDP, it requires prior declaration or authorization depending on the nature of the processing.
Example. A prospect file sourced from Meta Lead Ads and hosted outside Morocco must be declared to the CNDP before any commercial use.
- CMP
Consent Management Platform: the banner and back-office that collect, store and broadcast the user's cookie consent to marketing tags. Essential to activate Consent Mode v2 and comply with GDPR / Law 09-08.
Example. A properly wired CMP (Axeptio, Cookiebot, Didomi) blocks all marketing pixels by default until the user consents, and unlocks them selectively per category.
